I had developed a habit of listening to a video streaming site in the background before going to bed.
I would find random, intriguing videos on my phone, put them on my wireless earbuds, and let them play in the background.
Most of the time, I would doze off, not remembering anything about the content of the videos.
Yet, somehow, I had become unable to fall asleep without the cold, robotic voice accompanying me.
Just as I was about to drift off to sleep, a voice that made me question my ears echoed through the room.
“On November 4th, Year 2 of the Ansei era, an unbelievable event occurred.”
Ansei era? What era was that even referring to?
Lying in bed, half awake, I listened on.
“The devastation in Kishu was unimaginable.”
“The number of collapsed houses is beyond counting. How many lives were lost?”
The video continued, the emotionless voice reciting the lines.
“Oh, it’s unbelievable. By the time this reaches someone’s ears, they will probably think my story is a lie. Yet, I will still post this as a record. I hope this becomes valuable evidence for the future.”
The monologue went on, but the drowsiness overtook me, and I fell asleep.
The next day, I wondered if I had stumbled upon an incredible discovery or an extraordinary artifact. I searched through my history and tried various keywords, but I couldn’t find the same video again.
Was it all just a dream? Or could it be an unbelievable notion, a video post from the past…
